UPCD’S Benchmarking Activity with the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya

A team from the College of Dentistry visited the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya for benchmarking last February 26-28, 2024. This is in preparation for the planned PACUCOA accreditation that the College plans to start this year. 

The delegation from UPCD was led by Dean Michelle Segarra and members of the Executive Committee – Dr. Josievitz Tan-Zafra, Asst. to the Dean and College Representative to OILL; Dr. Melanie Ruth Karganilla-Frange, Chairperson of the Department of Clinical Dental Health Sciences; Dr. Arlene Cecilia Alfaro, Chairperson of the Department of Community Dentistry; Dr. Cristina Laureta, Program Coordinator, Graduate Program in Orthodontics; Dr. Bhabita Murjani, College Quality Assurance Officer; and Dr. Armin Segarra, Continuing Education Programs. 

The group was warmly received by the Faculty of Dentistri, University Malaya headed by Dean Zamri Radzi and the Department Chairpersons. The benchmarking activity was done on the morning of February 27 and started with the introduction of both Universities. The benchmarking was focused on the Best Practices in the following areas: Curriculum and Instruction, Research, Graduate Programs, Mentoring Program and Community Dentistry. The University of Malaya Faculty of Dentistry has a robust mentoring program which UPCD hopes to adopt. The UPCD delegates were also given a thorough orientation of the undergraduate curriculum of UM, as well as their graduate course offerings. 


The benchmarking trip was capped by a visit and dinner at the world-famous Petronas Towers. It was a very insightful and productive benchmarking activity.
