DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL DENTAL HEALTH SCIENCES

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

On February 6, 2023, the Department of Clinical Dental Health Sciences conducted a formative assessment for all incoming first-time clinicians. This is probably the first formative assessment given to any clinician as there have been no known published nor documented assessment of the same nature in the past.

This batch of clinicians are enrolled under the new curriculum, wherein the clinical course has been divided into 4 courses, namely: Dentistry 171. 1; Dentistry 171.2; Dentistry 172.1 and Dentistry 172.2. Thus, for those clinicians who would take Dentistry 171.1, a formative assessment was given to them.

This first-ever assessment has been given as several written examinations whose aim was to determine how much students have learned in their pre-clinical courses especially in the disciplines of Oral Diagnosis, Oral Surgery, Endodontics, Periodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Fixed Partial Prosthodontics, Orthodontics and Removable Partial Prosthodontics. These are the courses that should have been understood and passed by the students prior to their enrollment to the first clinical course: Dentistry 171.1

The results of the formative assessment would aid the faculty members to identify misconceptions and gaps, and consequently, adjust teaching to help students achieve learning goals. This exam, thus, would not only benefit the incoming clinicians in eventually enhancing their knowledge and skills, but also, this would guide the clinical faculty in improving their techniques in training the clinicians and, in making revisions in the pre-clinical and subsequent clinical courses.
