UPCD WASTE AUDIT
UPCD moves towards being the 1st dental academic institution to practice Green Dentistry
The UP College of Dentistry held its first Waste Audit last May 24. The Waste Audit was in partnership with the international NGO Health Care Without Harm led by HCWH Executive Director Mr. Ramon San Pascual. Dean Michelle Segarra, the Vice-President of Health Care Without Harm Asia, led the UPCD Team. The UPCD Execom, Section Heads and alternate section heads and key non-academic personnel joined the audit.
An orientation visit was conducted by the HCWH team on May 14 to underline the significance and benefits of proper waste segregation and disposal and to give detailed instructions on the conduct of the waste audit. Waste collection was done from May 22 to 23 and the actual audit was on May 24.
According to Mr. San Pascual, UPCD is the first dental academic institution not only in the country but perhaps globally to embark on a waste audit as most healthcare waste audits are done by medical hospitals. Integral to the waste audit done last May 24 was the Plastic Waste Audit, a very significant environmental issue.
A debriefing and key informant interview followed the waste audit. The HCWH team is currently preparing the final report.
