A faculty member and five undergraduate students from the College of Dentistry attended the Dental Summer Course 2024 from July 15 to 21 at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
The theme of the course was "Innovations in Digital Dentistry for Inclusive Oral Health: Addressing Special Needs." Participants attended lectures on Special Care Dentistry, emphasizing interprofessional collaboration between dental specialists, psychologists, and researchers in disability and inclusive community development.
In addition to lectures, there were field visits to the SLB Negeri Bantul and Balai Rehabilitasi Terpadu Penyandang, a school/center disabled children and adults, respectively.
During these visits, participants observed UGM's projects at the institution, including oral health education, screening, and preventive treatments such as sealants and atraumatic restorations.
Dr. Juan Rafael Silva, a faculty member from the College of Dentistry, delivered a lecture on enhancing the oral health of the elderly, focusing on increasing access through teledentistry. The lecture was well-received, sparking meaningful discussions and questions among attendees.
He also participated in a forum with the Dean and various dental departments of UGM, alongside representatives from the University of Malaya and Universiti Sains Malaysia. The forum discussed the status of Special Care Dentistry in the Southeast Asian region and strategies for advancing this field in their respective countries and the region.
