THE ROAD TO DIGITAL DENTISTRY AT THE UPCD
The UP College of Dentistry seeks to incorporate Digital Dentistry in its academic curriculum, patient service and research activities. This project is divided into several phases. The first phase is the training of the faculty members who will be involved in the teaching and use of the equipment including computer-aided designing and computer-aided manufacturing. The second phase will be the procurement of the necessary equipment, identification of the digital laboratory and will plans for preventive maintenance and service. The third phase will be the implementation of the project, and the last phase will be continuous monitoring and evaluation.
The inspiration behind the Digital Dentistry project came from several international educational conferences attended by Dean Segarra such as the Southeast Asia Association for Dental Education (SEAADE) and Association for Dental Education in the Asia Pacific (ADEAP). In these conferences, the Dean of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City School of Dentistry presented how they were able to incorporate Digital Dentistry in their curriculum. The project started with having several faculty members and students sent to National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University to train in Digital Dentistry. Upon return to their own university, the faculty members conducted surveys to the faculty and students to get their feedback on the feasibility, how it will be included in the curriculum and how to sustain the program.
Dean Segarra is
adopting the same approach. Last August 10-13, five (5) faculty members: Dr.
Maycarol Sia, Dr. Maricar Lachica, Dr. Anne Nikole Delos Santos, Dr. Dan Aron
Santiago and Dr. Louise Mediran, were sent to National Yang Ming Chiao Tung
University (NYCU) for a two-day training in Digital Dentistry. They were tasked
to conduct feasibility studies, where to incorporate Digital Dentistry in the
curriculum, how to teach the course, among others. Dean Segarra together with
Dr. Armin Segarra, also paid a courtesy visit to the current Dean of NYCU,
Professor Shou-Yen Kao and to the Immediate Past Dean, Distinguished Professor
Ming-Lun Hsu where they discussed strengthening the existing Memorandum of
Understanding between the two Universities.
