SEAADE 2022 - SPECIAL CARE DENTISTRY SYMPOSIUM

The Special Care Dentistry (SCD) was part of the Preconference Workshop at SEAADE held last November 24, 2022.

The purpose of the conference was develop a common undergraduate curriculum for dental students. The different country representatives were tasked to give an update on SCD in their country. Prof. Emeritus Raman Bedi of King's College London and the Founding Chairman of the Global Child Dental Fund moderated and led the discussions for the recommendation to be presented to the SEAADE Dean's council. He was also joined by Dr. Jacob John of the University of Malaya. Dr. Gustavo Molina, the President of the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (IADOH) gave an introduction to IADOH and background of Special Care Dentistry in Hongkong.

Among the countries who participated were Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The Philippines' representatives were Dr. Angelina A. Atienza, Dr. Jessica Rebueno Santos and Dr. Josievitz Tan-Zafra. They reported that UP College of Dentistry incorporated it into the curriculum in 2018 as a new course for Year Level 5 of the DDM curriculum. It will be offered for the first time in the 2nd semester of the AY 2022-2023.

Co-requisites with SCD are clinical and Community dentistry rotations with opportunities for shaping psychomotor skills and affective behavior. Patterned after the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (IADH) and British Society for Disability and Oral Health (BSDH), it aims to include the management of oral health care of people with special needs. The workshop was the perfect venue to interact and exchange ideas with other foreign delegates. Much information was learned which can be applied to enrich the teaching of Special Care Dentistry in the Philippines.
