UPCD BAGS 3RD PLACE IN THE SEAADE ORAL PRESENTATIONS COMPETITION (SIMULATION-BASED LEARNING)

UPCD BAGS 3RD PLACE IN THE SEAADE ORAL PRESENTATIONS COMPETITION (SIMULATION-BASED LEARNING)

The UP College of Dentistry placed 3rd in the Oral Presentations Competition – Simulation-Based Learning Category during the 33rd Southeast Asian Association for Dental Education (SEAADE) held in Siem Reap, Cambodia last November 24-26, 2022.

In his presentation “Teaching Cognitive and Psychomotor Skills in Oral Anatomy Virtually”, Dr. Armin Segarra presented teaching innovations used by the Oral Anatomy faculty members in teaching the course during the pandemic when they shifted to online mode. The main challenge was to teach the morphology and anatomy of human teeth without the students seeing and holding natural human tooth specimens. The faculty members resorted to the use of simulation-based applications such as Bonebox and Real Tooth which are found on iPhones and Android phones.

Dr. Monica Yniguez made use of the flipped classroom in her lectures. Dr. Michelle Segarra used the 3D Digital App “e-Human” and took photos of the different teeth and uploaded them to make up for the students’ lack of experience in seeing actual human tooth specimens. For the drawing and carving exercises which were aimed at developing drawing and carving skills of the students and to complement the lectures on the anatomy of the teeth, several synchronous demonstrations on drawing and carving done thru zoom, recorded, and uploaded in Canvas, replaced face-to-face laboratory classes. Checking of laboratory exercises was done thru photos sent via messenger. Students’ skills in drawing and carving were confirmed thru synchronous exams conducted via zoom with the end product sent to the faculty members via courier service for checking. For the occlusion exercises, Dr. Armin and Michelle Segarra, devised a method using paper cut-outs of teeth to replace natural tooth specimens and tooth carvings, thereby eliminating the need for articulators which were difficult to obtain during the pandemic.

Dr. Michelle Segarra, co-author of "Teaching Cognitive and Psychomotor skills in Oral Anatomy Virtually" accepts the 3rd Place Award.

The presentation highlighted the ingenuity and creativity of UPCD faculty members at a time when supplies were scarce and difficult to obtain.

Other presenters at the SEAADE were Dr. Jessica K. Rebueno Santos on “Dental Interns Engagement with Community Partners for Oral Health Promotion” (Oral Presentation), and the group of Mr. Aaron Tuazon, Patricia Angelica Gloria, Candace Noelle Quicio and Dr. Angelina Atienza on “Knowledge, Attitude and Practices of Senior Clinicians of the UP College of Dentistry on ICDAS”.
